SAN DIEGO -- The worst crime wave to hit San Diego State in 20 years is prompting university police to bring in more officers, 10News reported.Since the semester started in late August, there have been a half-dozen attacks on or near campus, university officials said. In the past two weeks, there have been five separate attacks, according to 10News."This frequency of events of such severity has been unprecedented in anyone's recollection," said San Diego State University Police spokesman Jason Foster.
The first crime happened Oct. 7, 2005 when a female student was sexually assaulted while walking home from a party. The latest crime happened Wednesday, when two men carjacked a 2006 BWM from a campus parking lot, officials said.SDSU police began beefing up patrols Wednesday night and were putting their own officers on overtime in addition to bringing in additional officers from neighboring CSU campuses, 10News reported.Earlier in the week, the university's police chief issued a safety alert over the Internet to all SDSU students, telling them that even if they don't live on campus or nearby, they should take extra precautions. His alert was issued Tuesday, just hours after a man broke into an off-campus sorority house. One of the sorority members foiled the break-in by calling police, and the assailant fled, officials said.Authorities asked students and faculty to first call campus police, as opposed to 911, if another crime occurs. The number for campus police is (619) 594-1991. The number for SDSU's Night Escort is (619) 594-6659.Campus police told 10News that they do not believe the crimes are related.
