Fugitive Hurled Self Through Window In Escape Attempt

LA MESA, Calif. -- A 34-year-old transient was in jail Monday after leading La Mesa officers on a pursuit in a stolen car, then trying to escape on foot, police said.A La Mesa police officer spotted a white 2002 Volkswagen Eurovan that had been reported stolen headed southbound on Interstate 8 Sunday evening, police said. The officer turned on his siren, but the driver would not yield.Followed by a San Diego Police helicopter, the van exited the Interstate, and the driver abandoned the vehicle in the 4300 block of 48th Street, said La Mesa Police Sgt. Mike McIntyre .The fugitive then hurled his body through a glass window at a groundfloor apartment unit, where he asked acquaintances to hide him, McIntyre said.Officers from the San Diego Police Department surrounded the apartment and the fugive surrendered, McIntyre said. He was turned over to the La Mesa Police Department.The suspect, Jon Riley, was booked on suspcion of auto theft, burglary and vehicular flight from a peace officer, McIntyre said.A 20-year-old woman who had been a passenger in the stolen van was detained but subsequently released, McIntyre said.
