A 17-year-old autistic boy who had been missing was found safe on a running trail near the Bonita Golf Course Thursday, San Diego County sheriff's officials said.

Matthew Baumann was reported missing from his home in the 3200 block of Kennelworth Lane in Bonita around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, sheriff's Sgt. Christine Robbins said.

Deputies from the sheriff's Search and Rescue Unit found Baumann near the golf course around 12:20 a.m. Thursday, Robbins said.

Uninjured, he was returned home to his family, Robbins said. The reason for his disappearance was not immediately clear.
