SAN DIEGO -- A derailed freight train in the Miramar area halted commuter-rail runs south of the Sorrento Valley Friday, 10News reported.
Six of 34 cars on a southbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train tumbled from a stretch of tracks near Camino Santa Fe and Frostmar Place about 11:45 p.m. Thursday, according to the North County Transit District. The accident forced Amtrak, Coaster or freight trains to stop service south of the Sorrento Valley stop. Coaster commuters deboarded at Sorrento Valley and were then bused downtown.Crews removed all the cars from the tracks and are repairing the track. All trains and commuter service will likely not return to normal until Saturday morning, 10News reported. The cause of the non-injury accident was under investigation, NCTD public information officer Sarah Benson said. This afternoon, busses will transport Coaster commuters from Santa Fe Depot and take them to Sorrento Valley. For Amtrak customers, a bus bridge will be provided from Santa Fe Depot to Solana Beach where commuters can then catch the train.Transit officials are asking passengers to make alternative arrangements and to travel by car, if possible. The derailment forced cancellation of late Friday-night Coaster service, including trips that normally leave Oceanside at 8:26 p.m. and 10:55 p.m., and those that depart San Diego at 9:45 p.m. and 12:05 a.m., Benson said.
