4-year-old rescued from water at Mission Bay

SAN DIEGO - Lifeguards rescued a 4-year-old boy struggling in the waters of Mission Bay Friday afternoon, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials.

The incident happened along East Mission Bay Drive and Fiesta Island Drive in an area called Leisure Lagoon, officials said.

SDFRD officials said the boy had a life jacket on, but it was too big and he was struggling to move around with it on. The boy's parents, who were nearby, did not realize he was having problems with the life jacket.

The boy ended up face-down in the water, and that is when lifeguards spotted him and came to his aid.

Officials said the boy is expected to be OK but was taken to the hospital as a precaution because he swallowed a good amount of salt water.
