SAN DIEGO - Crews rescued four men who were trapped in a sewage line near the border on Wednesday.

The incident was reported just after 9 p.m. in the 700 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The men, who are suspected of trying to enter the country illegally, were rescued just before 10 p.m. They were covered in raw sewage and were trembling and shaking after being trapped in the line for several hours.

Rescue crews hosed the men down with water and gave them blankets before they were taken away in handcuffs.

U.S. Border Patrol agents and the fire department personnel removed four manhole covers during their search for the men, who were apparently yelling for help after becoming trapped.

One man was transported to a local hospital to be treated, possibly for hypothermia.

No additional information about the incident was immediately available.
