A Burbank man found dead on a Carlsbad street was a cameraman working on an unscripted Fox Broadcasting series being taped in Oceanside, authorities said Tuesday.

Michael Burke, 25, a freelance assistant cameraman, was working on "Renovate My Family," which deals with both home and personal improvement, according to Carlsbad police Lt. Don Rawson and a Fox publicist.

A newspaper delivery driver found Burke's body about 3 a.m. Monday in a southbound lane of Carlsbad Boulevard at Breakwater Lane, north of Poinsettia Lane, Lt. Kelly Cain said.

Investigators initially thought Burke was the victim of a hit-and-run, but a close examination of the body revealed wounds that might not have been caused by a vehicle, Cain said.

"He's got major trauma," Cain said, adding the injuries were mostly to the head.

Burke died of blunt force cranial and thoracic injuries, according to the medical examiner's office.

The manner of death is still pending, as are toxicological tests, a medical examiner investigator said.

The Fox publicist confirmed "that there was a fatality unrelated to production."

"Renovate My Family" had just concluded filming in Oceanside, the publicist said.

Burke is survived by his parents, James and Jane Burke, of Menifee.

According to another source -- an Oceanside resident who did not want to be identified -- the show was taped at an Oceanside home in the Loma Alta area, between Oceanside Boulevard and Mesa Drive.

Burke was on his way to a Carlsbad hotel from a "wrap party" when he was killed, the Oceanside resident said.

There was no indication that Burke had been robbed, police said.

Carlsbad police were still investigating.
