The Fourth of July was not too kind to dogs, as Animal Control reported more than 100 calls for dogs which ran away because of noise from fireworks.

By noon Monday, Animal Control officers had picked 20 animals who had been reported missing, but there are dozens more still unaccounted for.

"If the animal is picked up and it has a microchip or license, animal control officers will call the owner to come and pick it up otherwise there is a four day holding period, excluding Sunday and Monday," Animal Control Lt. Tom Ignacio said.

Ignacio suggested pet owners check the shelter nearest their home, or visit San Diego Animal Control Website.

Shelters reopen Tuesday.
