Sailor Discharged Over Hazing Incident Talks To 10News

Discharged Sailor Charlie Davis Says Hazing Incident Was Play Wrestling

A former Navy sailor in the middle of a wrestling match that got him and seven others fired for hazing shared his side of the story with 10News on Friday.

Cell phone video shows two sailors in blue fatigues wrestling in a narrow aisle on the USS Bonhomme Richard. On the video, Charlie Davis is the one who gains the upper hand, leading to a tap out on a locker. Both he and other man walked away.

'[It was] play wrestling," Davis told 10News. "Boys being boys."

However, the other sailor reported the incident. Navy officials – citing the uniform code of justice – viewed it as hazing and fired Davis and the seven others watching.

Davis said he was approached by the group earlier and jabbed a few times.

"A couple of the guys wrestled me down and had fun with me and then shook my hand and welcomed me aboard," he said. "[It] happened to two or three other guys."

Then, it was Davis' turn but things became a little uglier.

"The kid took it too seriously and he couldn't handle wrestling," he said. "Now, he went and told a fib."

Davis said he is disappointed in himself for not being professional, but he believes the Navy investigation should have been more in-depth. He thinks the Navy is wrong about zero-tolerance in this instance.

"I buy into it for drugs and alcohol: that's zero-tolerance," said Davis. "But play wrestling with no malicious intent and for eight people's lives to be destroyed… you have got to be kidding me."

The 20-year-old former sailor said he is back to square one. He said he plans go back to Dallas, Texas and start his life over.
