SAN DIEGO -- A new program in San Diego aims to help veterans get a key tool after they deploy.
Michael Baker, a semi-retired businessman from Minnesota, started a program that takes used computers, refurbishes them and then gives them to veterans for free. Baker said it felt like the right thing to do."I could not believe we have veterans out there needing jobs and becoming homeless because they didn't have the tools like a computer to help themselves get on their feet," he said.Baker, a Vietnam veteran who was wounded in combat, put himself through Microsoft's Certification programs. He said he has given away 300 computers through PCs 4 Veterans. Most were given away in Minnesota. Now that Baker has moved to San Diego, he's trying to get PCs 4 Veterans started in the area.Derek Jaworski, a combat veteran of Afghanistan, said he found Baker's nonprofit website in the nick of time."My computer had been on three deployments," said Jaworksi. "The screen is cracked and doesn't work, so searching for benefits or jobs wasn't easy."The problem for Baker is that the demand outstrips supply. He is hoping that a new agreement with DeVry University in Mission Valley will give him the work space he needs to refurbish enough computers to meet the need. For more information and how you can donate, visit PCs4Veterans.org
