CHP: 5 Deaths, 58 DUI Arrests Over New Year's
CHP Says Drunken Driving Arrests Down Slightly From Same Time Last Year

SAN DIEGO -- The California Highway Patrol on Monday announced there were five traffic deaths and 58 suspected drunken driving arrests in San Diego County over the New Year's holiday weekend.
The deaths were reported by law enforcement agencies in San Diego County between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, up from just one during the same period last year, the CHP said.Drunken driving arrests were down slightly from 60 during the same time frame last year.Statewide, the CHP logged 22 traffic deaths, down from 25 recorded last year. Eleven of the deaths this year occurred in CHP jurisdictions and, in 10 instances, those killed were not wearing seat belts, according to the CHP.Drunken driving arrests were up, with CHP officers arresting 1,181 people this year, compared to 961 last year.
