SAN DIEGO -- More than a dozen eastern San Diego homes were without water service Wednesday after a corroded water main ruptured and pushed through a residential street.
The 8-inch cast-iron pipe broke about 10:25 a.m. in the 6400 block of Celia Vista Drive, near Rolando Boulevard, according to Arian Collins of the San Diego Water Department. Repair crews had the water shut off by 11:15 a.m., he said. When the pipe broke, high water pressure forced it up through the pavement, Collins said. The area around the break was closed while crews worked to repair the rupture, which was expected to be completed about 6 p.m., he said.Water service to the 16 affected residential homes was also expected to be restored by about 6 p.m., Collins said.Corrosion to the more than 50-year-old pipe was to blame for the break, he said.
