ENCINITAS, Calif. - Sheriff's officials said three teens were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after suffering injuries while playing with fireworks.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the three teenage boys -- ages 15, 15, and 17 --were hurt shortly before 2:45 p.m. in a canyon off Bonita Road. Someone notified authorities of a loud boom, prompting the response.

Encinitas Fire Department officials told 10News two of the boys "sustained traumatic injuries" and were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital. The third teen was taken to Scripps Encinitas Hospital with minor injuries.

Sheriff's officials did not disclose the type of explosives the teens had in their possession.

Sheriff's officials are investigating the incident.
