A disagreement over some birthday cake smeared on a woman's face triggered a stabbing that left three people hospitalized Sunday, police said.

The attacker apparently was enraged when his sister's boyfriend smeared some cake on the young woman's face at a gathering in a home in the 3600 block of Fairmount Avenue about 10:55 p.m. Saturday, San Diego police Officer David Stafford said.The boyfriend, who is in his 20s, and two other young men were taken to a hospital to be treated for their wounds, he said.Police apparently know who the attacker is, but he had fled by the time officers arrived.His name was not released.
