3 injured in flash fire, possibly hash-related

SAN DIEGO - An explosion possibly caused by an illicit drug-manufacturing operation injured three people at a Mira Mesa apartment complex today, authorities reported.

The blast in the 10100 block of Camino Ruiz occurred about 3 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Medics took two men and a woman to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest for treatment of apparently non-life-threatening burns, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.

Firefighters called in San Diego police over suspicions that the flash fire was caused by attempts to create hash oil, a concentrated marijuana extract, Swanson said. The process of making the narcotic often involves the use of highly flammable liquid butane.
