Report: Crime At Local College Campuses Up

Sex Crimes, Drug Arrests Up, New Info Shows

UPDATED: 8:56 pm PDT October 28, 2011

Crime on San Diego college campuses has gone up, according to new information obtained by 10News, and some students said they are not surprised.

San Diego State University student Alana Brooks told 10News she has heard stories about the campus feel changing at night.

"I'm hearing just negative things … women being molested behind Dumpsters, alleys. Men being stabbed in the stomach while walking back from a party. It's just unnecessary nonsense and I don't think it's right," Brooks said.

According to numbers obtained by 10News, the number of sex crimes has increased in the last year, from two to 11.

The increase has Brooks carrying around pepper spray on campus.

"It's really little. You just turn the little thing and spray it. It's easy and it's quick," said Brooks.

The new numbers also show alcohol arrests at SDSU are up -- from 40 in 2008, to 42 in 2009 and 66 in 2010.

SDSU spokesman Greg Block said, "We're doing everything we can to keep our community safe. In general, most of our numbers have gone down. This is a safe campus to be on."

Block also told 10News while crime numbers have gone up in some areas they have also gone down in others like car thefts and aggravated assaults.

Block said the reason for the 500 percent increase in forcible sex crimes on campus is that more victims are coming forward.

"A lot of the times those are the [crimes] that go unreported, so it might be a factor of they are being reported more," Block told 10News.

San Diego community colleges are also seeing a rise in arrests, according to new data.

There were 16 drug arrests at local community colleges in 2008, 36 in 2009 and 85 in 2010.

Brooks told 10News she is happy with SDSU campus police but still wants more done to protect the students.

At SDSU, there are emergency kiosks all over campus. Students told 10News they generally feel safe on campus and know if they every need help police is just the push of a button away.
