SAN DIEGO -- A road cone sitting in front of the entrance to Palomar Mountain State Park foreshadows the dangers that lay ahead.
The park will be shut down July 1, along with 69 other state parks, as part of an effort to cut $22 million from the state's budget. However, many campers like Fallbrook resident Kyle Beebe and her family discovered the closures are ahead of schedule. On October 2, Beebe was one of 183 groups that had their camping reservations canceled as Palomar Mountain closed two of its campgrounds, Doane Valley and Cedar Grove Group. Efforts are under way to keep the park open, including on Facebook.Earlier this week, Gov. Jerry Brown signed into legislation Assembly Bill 42, which would allow nonprofit organizations to help operate some parks if they meet certain criteria. However, the bill doesn’t guarantee Palomar’s survival.Park officials said it would cost $297,464 to operate the park annually. Meanwhile, the park generates an average of $140,022 in fees and other charges annually.Theoretically, closing the 1800 acre park will save the state approximately $157,442 a year.
