CORONADO, Calif. -- Coronado police are investigating a string of home burglaries where the thieves are after one thing: high-priced silver.
"We have had a series of theft of silver flatware from within people's homes," said Coronado Police Chief Lou Scanlon.Scanlon and other members of the Coronado police department addressed the concerns of roughly 90 residents who gathered on the lawn of a neighbor's home on Wednesday."They're very frightened," said Coronado resident Jerry Toci. "People shouldn't be frightened to live in their homes."Police said six homes have been burglarized since April.According to police, the burglaries have happened along Balboa Avenue, Country Club Lane, "A" Avenue and "G" Avenue. One resident who did not want to be identified said she had her home burglarized two days ago. She is missing $30,000 worth of silver flatware. She is one of six homeowners that Scanlon and his investigators are talking with to find a common denominator."I think there's a very strong common denominator in that suddenly there's a hunger for sterling flatware," said resident Phillip Manion. "I think with the economy and all the other things that are taking place right now the opportunity for this is going to grow."Police believe the thefts may have been an inside job by someone who may have had access into the home."There are no signs of forced entry [and] no indication that someone broke into the home," said Scanlon.A detective has now been assigned to investigate the string of burglaries in Coronado.
