Diaz then lost control of the bicycle and veered into traffic on Lake Boulevard near Chauncey Road around 1:30 p.m.

Diaz fell off the bicycle into the traffic lane and was struck by a blue Hyundai Elantra driven by Ramona Elenes, 39, of Oceanside. Diaz died on impact.

Gama was seriously injured and taken by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. He is expected to survive, 10News reported.

Elenes pulled over immediately after she hit the boys. She was not cited, according to police.

The boys were riding home from Madison Middle School, which is about a quarter-mile east from the accident scene.

The Vista Unified School District Superintendent, Dave Cowles, said grief counselors are available Wednesday to students.

"I know that it's a tragic accident that we're having to cope with. We'll have grief counselors and other information that we can share with the students at the school so they can adjust to the situation. This is not a loss that anyone's going to recover from quickly, if ever," Cowles said.
