SAN DIEGO -- A local comic book publisher says it will tell the story of the secret mission that took out al-Qaida founder Osama bin Laden in a graphic novel.Tom Waltz, senior staff writer and editor at IDW Publishing in San Diego, showed 10News the first images of a graphic novel set to tackle a monumental task: to tell the story of the raid that killed bin Laden.Among the images are pre-raid Navy SEALS training session, a military dog preparing to drop from the sky and President Barack Obama weighing a risky decision."Short of being in a movie, you can't be this engaged in a mission when reading this novel," said Waltz. With Hollywood's top military consultants on board, IDW says the 88-page hardcover novel titled "Code Word: Geronimo" will be the most accurate depiction yet of the operation, from the planning to the raid itself."This is going to be as accurate as it can be within security restraints. There will be some literary license, but it'll be 100 percent accurate in terms of military protocol," said Waltz. In one set of panels, a courier -- the key to locating bin Laden -- waves to a shepherd, who is actually a U.S. intelligence officer. The officer radios in the information, declaring "inbound white Toyota truck, two aboard."IDW has plenty of experience to draw from, as it publishes dozens of comics, from Star Trek and Transformers to G.I. Joe.This time, a real-life event will take center stage."The purpose is to tell an honest, political story," said Waltz. It's story of training, military intelligence and courage drawn together."What it is, is a historical tribute showcasing the honor and valor of the Navy SEALS who were involved in [a] historical raid," said Waltz. The graphic novel is set to go on sale September 6, and part of the proceeds will be donated to the American Veterans Center.
