SAN DIEGO -- Authorities may not have noticed accused child killer Richard Tuite walk out of a downtown courthouse Monday, but one man said he did.
A man named Martin, (pictured, left), who did not want to reveal his last name to 10News, said he saw Tuite walk out the courthouse and alerted deputies."For some reason my eyes turned to that face. It just clicked, that face was familiar," Martin said.
Martin said he recognized Tuite from watching television news.He said he did not remember Tuite's name until he mentioned it to a man sitting next to him on a bench in the lobby of the courthouse."He mentioned the name Tuite and I said, 'That's the guy, he just walked right by,'" Martin said.Martin said he went to deputies gathered by the metal detectors and told them Tuite just walked out."They kind of laughed at me, like I was an idiot or whatever. One of the guys told me, 'Why don't you just give me your cane, and I'll go run after him,'" Martin said. The Sheriff's Department admitted Tuite walked out past the metal detectors through the front doors."If they would have took my word they probably would have caught him outside as he was running, but they just ignored it," Martin said.Martin said in spite of being ridiculed, he is glad Tuite is no longer roaming the streets."Fortunately, he didn't hurt nobody and he got caught," he said.A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Department said it will investigate Martin's allegations.
