SAN DIEGO -- At least one person is dead and two are injured after a rollover crash in the Rancho Penasquitos area on Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to the CHP, a sport utility vehicle traveling on eastbound state Route 56 somehow lost control and flipped over just west of Black Mountain Road at about 6:21 p.m.Authorities said the driver -- who was alone in the SUV -- was trying to make a lane change when the car went up an embankment, crashed through a fence and struck at least two bicyclists riding eastbound on a bike path, dispatchers said. It's unclear how the she lost control of the SUV."We don't know if it was due to another vehicle or what the reason was," said CHP officer John Tyler.CPR was administered to an injured bicyclist but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was identified as 40-year-old Nick Venuto, a father of two from Poway.Another cyclist was transported with major injuries to Scripps La Jolla Hospital along with the SUV driver, who was identified by the CHP as Sheena Saranita, 27, of San Diego. The bike path is a popular one in the area. Some felt the cyclists were helpless in avoiding the crash.Cyclist Chris Alford told 10News, "I don't think there's anything that the cyclist could've done.""To see a car come all the way from the freeway, up an embankment flipped over and see a couple of bikes laid out over there... I mean, it's pretty darn scary," said cyclist Tom Hillebrecht. The crash remains under investigation. The CHP does not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
