Missing SDSU Student Donna Jou

Man Connected To Student's Disappearance To Be Released

John Steven Burgess Admitted To Disposing Of Body Of SDSU Student Donna Jou

A man who admitted to his involvement in the disappearance of a San Diego State University student in 2007 may be released from prison as early as this week.

John Steven Burgess was supposed to spend five years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in connection with the disappearance of SDSU student Donna Jou, but 10News learned Burgess' sentence may only last two years.

Reza Jou, the father of Donna Jou, said he received a letter from the California Institution for Men in Chino, just outside of Los Angeles, which alerted him to Burgess' early release, citing good behavior.

"That's their reasoning, good behavior, which I have a very difficult time digesting their reasoning," Reza Jou told 10News from his home in Houston.

Jou's mother, Nili, said, "I’m mad. I'm very upset. I'm very angry about the system that is failing us over and over and over again."

On Monday, Nili Jou traveled to Sacramento in hopes of speaking with Gov. Jerry Brown and asking him to keep Burgess in prison.

A representative with the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation told 10News Burgess was being let out early because his involuntary manslaughter charge, which is considered a non-violent crime by law, means he is eligible for half time.

In June 2007, prosecutors said Burgess lured 19-year-old Donna Jou thru a Craigslist ad.

According to authorities, Burgess took Jou to his home and injected her with drugs. Burgess said when he woke up the next morning he found her dead. He told authorities he panicked and dumped her body in the ocean.

Two years later, under a plea deal in a Los Angeles courtroom, Burgess admitted to dumping her body. For that, he received a five year sentence for involuntary manslaughter.

"This man is not going to stop," adds Reza Jou. "He's going to do it again, and he is going to be arrested, and he is going to destroy many other families."

"Donna didn't get justice. Justice wasn't done in her case," said Nili Jou. "You can mark my words. He will do it again because he doesn't know anything better."

Meanwhile, a protest is planned for Friday in Los Angeles, the day Burgess is set to be released.
