SAN DIEGO -- Police are still trying to identify those responsible for the suspected gang ambush of two churchgoers who were killed outside a Lincoln Park liquor store on Jan. 1, 2003.
San Diego City Councilman Charles Lewis and Chief of Police William Landsdown asked during a news conference for people's help to solve a double murder that occurred last year.
"I wanted to call this press conference today to let my district know and let those murderers know that we're still coming after you, that it's not stopping yet until we get justice in this situation," Lewis said.Slain in the 1 a.m. barrage of gunfire were 45-year-old Carol Waites, who lived in the nearby Valencia Park district, and Sharon Burton, 32, of Temecula. An 8-year-old boy was also critically wounded. The victims were outside Dr. J's Liquor, following a late-night New Year's Eve church service when the attackers arrived in at least one car, got out and fired as many as 50 shots, according to police. As the killers fled, one of the wounded women staggered into the store, where she died. Medics took the other one to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.Emergency crews found an unscathed toddler in a child safety seat in a car riddled with bullets.Officials urge anyone with information about the assailants to call Crime Stoppers' anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.
