'View' Host Offers Help To Homeless Ex-'American Gladiator'

Debbie Clark Was Known As 'Storm' On Early 1990s Show

A star on a popular 1990s TV show talked to 10News about her current life as one of San Diego's many homeless citizens and a co-host from "The View" has offered to help her get her life back on track.

Debbie Clark was known as "Storm" on the TV show "American Gladiators." For three seasons, beginning in 1991, Clark left many would-be contenders on their backs.

"I loved it ... totally loved it," Clark told 10News.

However, these days it is Clark who finds her back against the wall as she battles the toughest challenge of her life.

"Homelessness does not have any prejudice ... you can end up in the same situation, it doesn't matter," said Clark.

In 2008, Clark said she ended up in San Diego with her 8-year-old son after fleeing a domestic violence situation in South Carolina.

She said she bounced from shelter to shelter until eventually landing at St. Vincent de Paul, where she spent five months.

Clark had many jobs -- and ups and downs -- in the days after "American Gladiators."

"You never thought this would be you?" asked Ringo.

"Never, never, never would have thought, but the thing is the elevator goes both ways … you just never know," said Clark.

After more than two years of being homeless, the road back has been tougher than Clark ever imagined. She has had to conquer external demons, but also internal ones.

"Maybe alcohol, bad relationships, domestic violence ... I'll own up to it," said Clark.

Still, Clark remains determined to change her life.

"I'm willing to do everything and anything right now that I have to do [to] make things work; not only for me, but my son," said Clark.

A knee replacement while at St. Vincent serves as a permanent reminder of the physical demands from her "American Gladiators" days. But now, Clark said she is more focused on changing the present to make a better future for herself and her son.

"This is the lowest I've ever been in my life and I'm grateful for St. Vincent, but I'll never be here again … never be here again and it's only up from here," said Clark.

Clark's son is now 10 years old and attends the Monarch School, which offers education for homeless children.

Clark left St. Vincent this month and is now living with someone helping her get her life back on track.

"The View" co-host Sherri Shepherd heard about the story on 10News has offered to pay Clark's rent and utilities for six months.
