SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Gas & Electric's "smart meter" is being installed throughout San Diego County, but not everyone is happy about the company's plan to replace older meters. On Monday, SDG&E installed its one-millionth smart meter in Paradise Hills. The company said the wireless meters will eliminate the need for an SDG&E employee to go to individual homes and read meters. However, the installation has not been without problems."The problem that we had was the software was not communicating properly to the software within the meters, but we're confident we fixed that problem," said Caroline Winn of SDG&E.The Utility Consumer Action Network (UCAN) likes the idea of consumers being able to see and therefore control how much power or gas they're using through a website, but the agency also said consumers are finding that their monthly bill is higher than it used to be."We want to make sure those increases aren't from some funny business with the meters," said Joshua Anaya with UCAN.SDG&E said many of the old spinning dial meters were simply not accurate anymore and that the new smart meters accurately reflect what consumers are using.UCAN said it can't compare the accuracy rate because the old meters are recycled. The way to compare is to examine utility bills six months before the meters were taken out and six months after the new meters are installed.SDG&E said it is being as proactive as it can with consumers who believe their utility bills are out of the ordinary.
