DiCerchio, 65, was under the influence of alcohol when his 1984 Chevrolet El Camino crashed into an unoccupied car in a parking lot on Main Street in Chula Vista, according to police.

DiCerchio, who has been on leave since undergoing shoulder surgery three months ago, was charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence, then released on his own recognizance, Chula Vista police Lt. Richard Coulson said.

He talked about returning to his job, although he announced plans to retire in July 2004, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

DiCerchio's wife, Carolyn, told the newspaper that he plans to submit retirement papers Monday.

"That's it. It's over with," she told the Union-Tribune.

DiCerchio began his career in 1959 with the San Diego Police Department. He led the National City police force for seven years.
