ENCINITAS, Calif. -- A group of angry citizens is calling for Encinitas Mayor Dan Dalager to resign.About a hundred people rallied outside Encinitas City Hall on Wednesday and staged what they called a "citizens' revolt."People at the rally said they are holding city officials accountable for reckless fiscal mismanagement, ethics violations and questionable practices within city government."We have transparency problems. We have the public being treated with contempt. We have infrastructure problems, and after reviewing the Byzantine financial statements, they clearly are not coming clean with the scope of the financial problems of the city," said Encinitas resident Charles McDermott, who researched the city's budget. Many of the citizens at the rally said change is needed, which would start at the top with Mayor Dalager.10News reported in August about the kitchen appliances Dalager bought from an Encinitas appliance store for pennies on the dollar. In a later dispute between the appliance store owners and the city, Dalager sided with the store owners.Critics also accused Dalager of taking a loan of $100,000 from a person who does business with the city.At Wednesday's Encinitas City Council meeting, Dalager sat quietly during the public comment section. There was a standing ovation when Encinitas resident Steve Meiche called for him to step down."It's politics season," Dalager told 10News.Dalager is up for re-election in November. He said if people want him out of office, they should do so with their votes because he has no plans to step down.Do you have more information about this story? Click here to contact us.
