The quake was centered in the Tijuana River Valley just south of the city of Imperial Beach and north of Tijuana, Mexico.

According to San Diego State University geology professor Pat Abbott, the earthquake hit between San Diego's two major faults, the Rose Canyon fault and Newport Inglewood fault.

"We are in the zone between the two major faults and basically the land was torn or pulled apart," Abbott said.

The jolt was felt as far north as La Jolla and as far east as El Cajon.

No injuries or damages have been reported.
