Marine Suspected Of DUI In Orange County Crash

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- A 22-year-old Marine corporal stationed at Camp Pendleton was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of driving drunk and causing a three-vehicle crash in South Orange County that injured four people.The collision was reported at 10:43 p.m. Monday at Avery and Marguerite parkways in Mission Viejo.A Volkswagen Jetta coming off the northbound San Diego (5) Freeway apparently went through a red light at Avery and struck a Honda Element, which then struck a Chevrolet Cobalt, Orange County sheriff's Lt. Kurt Vassentine said.Three people briefly trapped in the Element were hospitalized with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, sheriff's Lt. Jim England said. Another person in the Cobalt sustained minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital for treatment.The Jetta's driver, Colin Newman, escaped injury and was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, England said.A Camp Pendleton spokesman confirmed that Newman is a Marine corporal stationed at the Northern San Diego County base.Newman was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to Orange County jail records.
