MANAMA, Bahrain -- Marines from Camp Pendleton reclaimed control of a pirate-held vessel off the Somali coast and have nine people in custody, according to the U.S. Navy. The Marines were aboard the USS Dubuque, a ship based out of San Diego, and 24 Marines from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Maritime Raid Force (MRF) were onboard.Early Thursday morning, the Camp Pendleton-based Marines boarded and seized control of the German-owned MV Magellan Star, a ship pirates captured the day before. The takeover happened in the Gulf of Aden, about 85 miles south of al Mukalla, a town in Yemen. The Navy said the nine pirates attacked the Magellan Star early Wednesday, taking the 11 crew members hostage. The Marines came aboard the ship and recaptured it within minutes."It was a matter of having all the right people, with the right kind of training, to do these kinds of boardings to regain control of the ship. It was the perfect combination," said Cmdr. Amy Derrick-Frost with the Fifth Fleet. The USS Dubuque is part of Combined Task Force 151, a multinational task force which conducts counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden and the Somali basin.A vessel from Turkey was first on scene with the USS Dubuque nearby, heading towards Jordan for training. The Marines, operating under CTF-151, safely took control of the ship. No shots were fired and the pirates surrendered.Turkish Navy Rear Adm. Sinan Ertugrul, commander of CTF-151, called piracy a regional problem with a "global impact.""We are completely committed to bringing the disruptive acts of piracy to an end," Ertugrul said.CTF-151 is one of three task forces operated by the 25 nation Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). CTF-151 was established in January 2009 in order to deter and suppress piracy, protecting maritime vessels of all nationalities.Do you have more information about this story?
