San Diego County Counsel John Sansone will retire in early January to teach law, it was announced Wednesday.

Sansone, who was appointed by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors as county counsel in 1986, has worked as an attorney in the office for the past 25 years.

He is leaving the county to work as a professor at the University of San Diego School of Law, where he will teach state and local government law, beginning in the spring semester.

Sansone will also assist in the supervision of USD law students participating in legal internships with local government agencies, according to the office of Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Pam Slater-Price.

Prior to joining the County Counsel's Office in 1985, Sansone served as the assistant director of financial aid at USD.
