CHP: No Traffic Fatalities Over Weekend So Far

CHP Arrested 72 Motorists Suspected Of DUI During Reporting Period

POSTED: 12:58 pm PDT September 6, 2010

The California Highway Patrol said Monday it got no reports of traffic fatalities in San Diego County during the first 60 hours of the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The reporting period began at 6:01 p.m. Friday and ended today at 6 a.m.

The CHP arrested 72 motorists across the county on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs since 6:01 p.m. Friday. That total is for CHP arrests on freeways and on surface streets in unincorporated areas, and does not include DUI arrests by city police departments.

Last year, there was one reported traffic fatality and 82 motorists were arrested for drunken driving during the same time period.

Statewide, this year, the CHP reported 1,360 drunken driving arrests by its officers, and 11 traffic fatalities in all 58 counties, during the 60-hour period. That compares to 1,262 CHP drunken driving arrests and 10 traffic fatalities statewide last year.
