Vandals Strike 'Cardiff Kook' Again

Surfer Statue Dressed As Zorro For Holiday Weekend

The statue of a surfer known as "The Magic Carpet Ride" has been vandalized again.

"My young son was wondering why a statue of a surfer has a cape, a sword and a hat with a red feather on it," Paul Frederiksen said.

The surfer statue, known to locals as the 'Cardiff Kook,' took on the persona of Zorro Sunday.

"This is pretty good, pretty good for the simplicity of it, but the shark was hard to beat," resident Frank Grosso said.

A paper mache Great White shark who appeared to be swallowing the surfer statue whole appeared in July.

There have been other incarnations – a pumpkin on his head for Halloween, a Santa hat for Christmas and a full Uncle Sam outfit for the Fourth of July.

But on a scale of one to ten, 10News asked Frederiksen how Zorro ranked.

"Maybe about a five, where the shark was a ten, maybe even an eleven - but this is fun," Frederiksen said.

The artist who created the statue does not find the impromptu decorations funny and actually finds them to be an insult. He insists the statue is not feminine looking.

A woman looking at the statue with her family disagreed, "I think it is a little feminine."

Though the artist, a surfer himself disagrees, these prank have gained the statue national attention.

The Wall Street Journal wrote an article last week about the different forms the statue as taken on.

A family 10News spoke to from Riverside said they come down often just to see the statue.

"We come visit here often and every time we come, it's a pretty funny prank," members of the Gomez family said.

While it is not just tourists who make a point to come see if the 'Cardiff Kook' has a new look, some locals enjoy it.

"This is supporting the local economy. It gets us to come here and then we have dinner or lunch. We walk the beach. They should do more of this," Grosso said.

Somehow we get the feeling Zorro will not be the last costume the Kook will wear this year.
