Family, Friends March For Teen Killed In Park

Marchers Set Out To Find Killer Of Joanna Vargas, 15

Family and friends of the 15-year-old gunned down in a Clairemont Park last week hit the streets on Friday to find her killer as the teen's father spoke out for the first time.

Chanting justice for Joanna and carrying signs saying, "stop the violence" and "we want justice," about 50 friends, family and people who live in the neighborhood marched up Balboa Avenue.

Joining the marchers was the father of Joanna Vargas, the teen who was gunned down in Lindbergh Park at 1:30 a.m. while she was hanging out with a cousin and their two boyfriends.

"They were here like all couples do, like talking, kissing, whatever," said Jesus Vargas, Joanna's father.

Vargas did not want to go on camera as he told 10News about the white SUV seen with its headlights off, creeping along the street during the last moments of Joanna's life.

"My daughter was dancing with her boyfriend," he said. "She didn¹t feel it when she got hit, she just kept dancing."

Seconds later, she fell to the ground. She had been shot in the back and the bullet went straight to her heart.

"It's been really hard because she was a good girl, and I least imagined it would be her," said Selena Vargas, a friend.

Police believe the killer is a local who knows the area well, which is why the marchers are on the streets, hoping someone will turn the killer in.

"I feel like it's helping her family, knowing that we're here for them and that we're not giving up on trying to find the person that killed her," said Selena Vargas.
