Program Encourages Residents To 'Shop Local'

'Buxback' Campaign Underway In Solana Beach

Through a new incentive program in Solana Beach, Solana Beach residents who shop at local businesses could be getting cash back in their pockets.

Jersey Mike's is one of the first businesses in Solana Beach to test a new program called "Buxback."

"It supports local stores in the community which then gives the consumers the opportunity to go to certain stores and boost the economy," said Kevin Kenney, the owner of Jersey Mike's sandwich shop.

The program works when participants enroll online with their credit card information. When they use the credit cards at participating locations, a percentage will be refunded back to the participant or a charity of their choosing.

"This is the first municipal model that we've launched. We're really excited about this kind of application of the program," said Brian Booth, the CEO of Buxback. "Ultimately it's going to help the city because more money will come in, which equates to higher tax revenues."

Solana Beach has seen its sales tax revenues rise and fall, but it currently has one of the healthiest increases in the county, which is at 9.3 percent.

Those behind the shop local campaign said every little bit helps, and a tangible reward should help boost the economy even more.

The amount of reimbursement depends on the merchant. The average is about eight percent, but the number could go all the way up to 50 percent.

The Buxback program has about seven merchants signed up in Solana Beach and 135 throughout the county.

Among Solana Beach residents, the word is just getting out about the program.

"It's definitely something I'd be interested in doing," said Solana Beach resident Jennifer Reges.

Other cities may soon adapt a program similar to Solana Beach's program, including San Diego.
