SAN DIEGO -- Repairs of a broken water main next to the downtown jail were delayed Friday when utility crews dug down to old railroad tracks. The 10-inch concrete pipe broke around 11:15 a.m. Thursday at Front and West B streets, one of three broken water mains during the day, said Arian Collins of the city of San Diego Public Utilities Department. The crews didn't know the tracks were there and had to dig out part of the track before the pipeline, which provides water for fire protection in the jail, could be repaired, Collins said. The cause of the break was unknown, he said.Collins said two breaks close together on a pipeline in Pacific Beach Thursday were repaired this morning. The breaks happened at Garnet Avenue and Fanuel Street.
