Bill Aims To Block Alcohol Sales At Self-Checkout Lanes

Supporters Say Bill Would Help Prevent Underage Alcohol Purchases

Supporters of Assembly Bill 1060 are asking Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign the bill that would prevent alcohol sales at store self-checkout lanes.

Several young adults said getting alcohol through a self-checkout lane was too easy because many times no one was looking.

Supporters said if Schwarzenegger signs the bill, it would make more difficult for underage drinkers to get their hands on alcohol and curb alcohol theft.

"It's really easy to get alcohol. It's not hard at all. They need to protect our youth better by carding," said Raul Gamez, who is over the legal drinking age and was part of the experiment.

In 69 percent of the visits, young people were able to fool the self-checkout system by scanning a similar item and bagging the alcohol.

Frederick Highbugh participated in the experiment and said, "All I had to do was scan the Coke twice and then put beer in the basket, and no one was really there to check me for it. Everybody was completely busy."

It might be an inconvenience for people used to checking out on their own, but Assemblyman Marty Block said this type of change will be worth it.

"For years we have used human checkers. It works. It costs the company a little more to hire someone instead of having a machine do it," said Block.

Highbugh said it was easy to make the switch and he wants to prevent teens from getting hurt.

"I've had peers at school that have been arrested … teen drinking and violence go together hand in hand," said Highbugh.

The governor's office said the bill has not reached Schwarzenegger's desk and he has not taken a position on it.

Schwarzenegger has until the end of September to sign it.
