Cal Fire Says Fire Started After 2 Immigrants In Distress Lit A Signal Fire

SAN DIEGO -- Firefighters expect to get the Cowboy Fire in the East County fully controlled by Tuesday evening, according to a Cal Fire spokeswoman.
The blaze that began about 1 p.m. Thursday was 100 percent contained on Monday after having burned 827 acres of back country, said Roxanne Provaznik of Cal Fire.The cost to fight the massive fire was about $2.5 million so far, she said.Four of the 354 firefighters assigned to battle the blaze have been injured by the heat, bee strings and sprains, according to Provaznik.The fire broke out along the Pacific Crest Trail when two people from Mexico illegally crossed the border, got lost and started a signal fire, firefighters said. Those people got away.
