A former Vista resident who posted a video on Facebook showing him mutilating and killing an opossum was charged with animal abuse, the San Diego Humane Society announced Thursday.

Carter Livingston, 19, allegedly posted a video showing him striking an opossum with a meat cleaver 44 times, eventually killing the animal, said Candice Eley of the San Diego Humane Society.

A local resident reported the video to the San Diego Humane Society on June 4, Eley said.

The organization's investigation unit determined that Livingston had moved to Placer County north of Sacramento, where the district attorney there filed an animal abuses charge against Livingston Wednesday, Eley said.

If found guilty, Livingston could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $20,000.
