Trial Date Set For Ex-HS Pitcher In Crash

Andrew Bellatti Charged In Crash That Killed David Reid

A Dec. 6 trial date was set Thursday for a former star pitcher at Steele Canyon High School, who faces charges stemming from a head-on crash that killed a 50-year-old Spring Valley man.

Andrew Bellatti, 19, is charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and two counts of reckless driving causing serious injuries -- all felonies -- in the Jan. 22 collision that killed David Norman Reid.

Authorities said Bellatti was driving up to 80 mph when his Ford Mustang veered onto the wrong side of Campo Road about 4:20 p.m., striking Reid's Dodge Caravan.

Reid's 17-year-old son, a passenger in the minivan and a student at Steele Canyon High, suffered major injuries, according to the CHP.

Rescuers tried to revive the elder Reid at the scene, but were unable to save him, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

CHP Officer Brian Pennings said there was no indication that drugs or alcohol played a part in the crash.

Bellatti, 18 at the time of the crash, was taken in the 12th round of last year's Minor League Baseball Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. He was seriously injured in the crash.

His passenger, a 16-year-old female student at Steele Canyon, also was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The defendant faces up to eight years in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Curtis Ross.
