Man Accused Of Vista Carjacking Arrested

Erwin Cazarez Arrested Wednesday Evening

POSTED: 4:52 am PDT September 2, 2010

A 26-year-old man was in custody Thursday accused of partnering with two other men to carjack a woman in Vista last month, a sheriff's sergeant said.

Erwin Cazarez was arrested without incident around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at his home in the 300 block of Smilax Avenue in Vista, said San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Scott Miedecke.

Earlier in the day, sheriff's gang detectives identified Cazarez as a suspect in the Aug. 25 carjacking of a woman in the 3000 block of Enterprise Court in Vista. During the carjacking, an acquaintance of the woman pointed a gun at her and demanded that she give up her vehicle. The woman and the acquaintance struggled over the weapon and a single round was fired into the passenger compartment of the vehicle before the woman gave up the vehicle to the acquaintance and his two male companions, Miedecke said.

From 5 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, the detectives conducted surveillance outside Cazarez' home, waiting for him to come out to execute the arrest, Miedecke said.

He was booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of armed robbery and carjacking, Miedecke said, adding that bail was set at $750,000.

One of the other two men Cazarez allegedly partnered with in the Aug. 25 carjacking was arrested Aug. 27. According to the sergeant, the other man -- identified as Pedro Santana -- was arrested in Escondido.

The third man remained at large as of early Thursday.
