CARLSBAD, Calif. -- A Carlsbad woman who was held hostage 10 years ago said she knows how the hostages involved in the ordeal at the Discovery Channel headquarters in Maryland on Wednesday must feel. The movie "Held Hostage" told the real-life story of Michelle Renee of Carlsbad, who had explosives strapped to her body by criminals who ordered her to rob a bank in November of 2000, or never see her 7-year-old daughter again."There's a lot going on emotionally, psychologically [and] mentally with the people that are being held hostage in terms of them thinking about the end of their life," said Renee. As Renee saw Wednesday's hostage drama unfold, she was immediately concerned for the hostages, who likely will suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, as both she and her daughter did."We were having really severe flashbacks. We were having nightmares [and] physical sensations," said Renee. "For me, I had very bad pain in my chest that would shoot down my arm."Renee, who helps coach trauma survivors and hostage negotiators, said the hostages have had their sense of security shattered."They are dealing with some real psychological damage from the things that were happening to them during their time held hostage and now in the aftermath... after the numbness wears off, they're going to be needing to learn how to cope with this," she said.Renee hopes the hostages will get help to work their way through the dark, emotionally crippling days ahead. She also wanted the hostages to know it took her two and a half years of counseling to get her life back on track."You can remember without reliving the event," she said.
