SAN DIEGO -- Almost 6,000 new students were expected to begin classes Monday at San Diego State University. The new students consist of 3,433 first-time freshmen and 2,416 transfer students, according to the university, which boasts a student body of more than 35,000.The fall semester gets under way exactly one week after a broken water main knocked out the air conditioning system to the main part of SDSU's campus, prompting some employees to receive unexpected days off in the midst of last week's heat wave. The 24-inch main broke under one of the campus' major walkways near Love Library last Monday night, flooding the area but not causing any major damage to the building's basement. Air conditioning was expected to be restored in time for Monday's classes.
