IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. -- An oily sheen was spotted in the open Pacific Ocean 6 miles west of Imperial Beach, but the Coast Guard says it had almost completely dissipated Sunday. The Coast Guard used a Jayhawk helicopter to investigate the sheen, which indicates a petroleum-based substance in the water, at 6:30 and 11 a.m. today, according to Petty Officer Allyson Conroy. The oil was first spotted Saturday morning, and is impossible to recover because it is in open water, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Mike Salviati. But Salviati said the sheen will not likely impact the shoreline.Investigators are attempting to determine where the sheen came from, but heavy ship traffic in the area makes it difficult, Salviati said.
