Police Say Man Tried To Rob Bank Of America In Hillcrest

A man who claimed he had a gun attempted to rob a Bank of America branch in Hillcrest Thursday, but left without any money, police said.

The would-be robber went into the branch at 737 University Ave. just before 3 p.m. and waited in line to see a teller, then presented a demand note that stated he had a gun, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The teller backed away from the counter, which was equipped with bulletproof glass, and the man took off, apparently realizing he wouldn't get any money, police said.

He was last seen walking westbound on University Avenue.

The FBI released surveillance photographs that showed the suspect, described as a white man in his early-20s, 5-feet-9 and 155 pounds, with brown hair and a black cap.
