Local Day Care's Future Hinges On State Budget

Ocean Beach Child Care Project Could Close Its Doors Mid-September If State Budget Is Not Signed

A local day care center is among the many state-funded facilities that face closure if the state's budget is not signed in the next few weeks.

Many parents across California wonder how they will take care of their children amid this budget crisis, including Sasha Cruse, who takes her child to the Ocean Beach Child Care Project.

"I just finished law school and passed the bar," Cruse said. "This is the only way that I could do what I need to do."

The Ocean Beach Child Care Project has 46 children enrolled and is currently running on donations.

Gaby Rendon, board president for the day care, said, "We are bringing toilet paper, paper towels."

"If the budget is not signed, we do not get anything," added Carol Cortez, the day care's director.

The Ocean Beach Child Care Project rents two houses on Chatsworth Boulevard from the city of San Diego. Combined, rent is only $3,000 a year but donations are not covering these expenses.

Cruse said she needs the day care in order to have time to find a job.

"It's kind of a chicken-egg thing where I need the money to start her in a regular day care, but I can't have the job if I don't have day care," said Cruse.

Cortez said, "Most of the parents said they would all quit their jobs."

If the center closes, 14 employees would also be unemployed.

"It could be today, tomorrow … it could take months," said Cortez.

Donations and proceeds from garage sales will probably keep the day care center open until mid-September.

If the state budget isn’t signed by then, dozens of parents will be forced to find an alternative daycare method.
