Radio Host Faces Fraud Charges Over Debt-Clearing Promises

Dave Burke's Show Taken Off Air, Offices Raided After 10News Report

Police in Westminster, Colo., a suburb of Denver, burst into the corporate offices of Get Real With Dave looking for the man behind the business, Dave Burke.

Office workers tried to stop the police from entering, and one employee said, "Our lawyer said you are welcome to wait outside in front of the building."

"Nah, I'm waiting here," responded the officer.

It took a while until Burke finally appeared and was handed a criminal complaint that charged him and his companies -- including Get Real With Dave and The Real Talk Network -- with fraud.

The usually talkative radio host was silent when approached by the Denver reporter who partnered with 10News on this story.

"Mr. Burke, the attorney general says you've got to stop operating the way you're doing business? Do you want to talk to us?" the reporter asked Burke as he walked out of the offices and into his car.

The self-proclaimed financial guru never even opened his mouth.

"You're a talkative guy, got a radio show, why not explain your side of the story," the reporter added, with no response.

Burke paid for airtime on radio stations across the country and was hosting 27 shows per week, including one on KFMB radio in San Diego.

During those shows, Burke made claims to listeners, including: "All of your debt is going to disappear, even if you don't have any money."

Those shows lured people into seminars Burke hosted, during which he is accused of exaggerating his credentials.

"I was considered one of the top financial experts in the world," he told one audience.

He told another group, "I was asked to do the state of the economy for our nation's leaders and top economists and we all got together and did that."

Regarding bankruptcy, Burke strongly declared, "Bankruptcy is not an option."

But the complaint pointed out he filed for bankruptcy twice in the past 13 years.

"I would describe him as a snake oil salesman," said Maureen Osterman of Pacific Beach.

She explains she stumbled onto Burke while flipping through the radio channels.

"I wasn't in financial trouble; I just wanted to quickly pay down my loan," she said.

She attended a seminar during which Burke told her she was the ideal client for his mortgage elimination program.

"He told me, 'You are a piece of cake. You can probably get this loan paid off in 3 or 4 years,'" she said.

She paid him $2,000, Osterman said Burke's program was unrealistic and the financial coaching sessions he promised her never happened.

She is relieved that after 111 people complained in 7 different states, Colorado's attorney general took action.

"I think it's great because I think [Burke] is a liar and a thief," she said.

The complaint details that Burke told potential clients that he came out of 10 years of retirement to "help save American families in this time of crisis."

Instead, the complaint said, he only added to the pain of those already suffering through the current recession.
