High School Hopes Cell Towers Will Help Budget

AT&T Will Pay The Poway Unified School District $382,000 To Install Cellular Antennas

A local high school is hoping a deal with AT&T can help compensate for state budget cuts.

10News learned AT&T will pay the Poway Unified School District $382,000 to install cellular antennas above the football stadium at Del Norte High School.

With construction set to begin soon, some parents have expressed mixed feelings.

Parent Maggie Zakoor said, “I was surprised and I didn't really know what to make of it.”

Several parents told 10News that they didn’t even know antennas were being added until two weeks ago, after permits were already approved. They are also concerned with the possible risk of radiation poisoning.

Poway Unified School District Superintendent John Collins addressed this issue in an e-mail, which read: “Research and governmental studies do not support the claim that cell towers present a health issue to students."

The Federal Communications Commission and American Cancer Society said that cellular towers are safe, but other groups like the Los Angeles Unified School District and most European countries have outlawed cell towers on school campuses.

The district will discuss the issue during an August 16 board meeting, and concerned parents hope to overturn the decision to install the antennas.

According to wireless firm Antenna Search, four new cell phone towers are scheduled to be built within a 40-mile radius of downtown San Diego. There are more than 300 towers currently in the city limits.

Meanwhile, more than 15 percent of U.S. households have dropped their home land-line phones in favor of a cell phone-only lifestyle.
