SAN DIEGO -- More than 235 local firefighters are braving extreme conditions in an effort to contain the wildfires in Los Angeles County. As flames raced through parts of Leona Valley, firefighters raced to stop the flames from spreading. Many of the firefighters, including some from San Diego Fire and Rescue are dirty, tired and ready for a break, but many of these fires are still going strong."The terrain is extreme is how I would describe it," Capt. David Gerboth of San Diego Fire and Rescue told 10News. "Most of the canyons are straight up and straight down. A lot of where the fire is burning is not accessible by roads."San Diego Fire and Rescue crews told 10News of the intense manual labor. Many firefighters were using hand tools to create lines around the flames, which were sometimes on steep slopes.Firefighters said at least one fire, the Bull Fire, was started by someone. As of Saturday morning, that fire was 81 percent contained.North County Fire has dispatched five of their engines to the West Incident burning in Tehachapi. With the fire 85 percent contained, those crews have gotten a much needed rest day."We're relieved. It's a lot of legwork; there's been a lot of hiking the past couple of days," said Capt. Randy Meers of North County Fire.Unfortunately, most of the exhausted firefighters have had very little time for rest, and many predict a very active fire season ahead."A lot of people are looking forward to the fire calming down and getting some sleep," said Capt. Gerboth. "Unfortunately the time we're in, although it may have started a little bit late, it looks like fire season did arrive. You can see throughout the state, it looks like it's going to be pretty busy for the rest of the month."10News learned additional engines have been called in locally and it could be weeks before crews return.
